The Feast of St Andrew, the Apostle

The Feast of St Andrew, the Apostle

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Rom. 10:9-18, Mt. 4:18-22. The words of Paul in today's first reading are so apt to focus our attention on the Feast of St Andrew, the Apostle as “faith comes from what is heard.” Although, for many of us, the moment of our baptism may be regarded as the beginning of our journey of faith, the growth in faith comes from the experience of people speaking about the One whom they know and love. Paul’s letter to the Romans surrounds that truth with the wonderful words of the prophet Isaiah: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.” These words move us to celebrate the journeys and labour of Andrew and the other Apostles. Yet, the words are real invitation to cherish those who have spoken to us about “the One whom they know and love.” Thus, we are challenged to make ourselves available for the proclamation of the Good News: "They will not believe in him unless they have heard of him, and they will not hear of him unless they get a preacher..."

In today's Gospel, Jesus extends this invitation of love to Andrew, an invitation that draws him into communion with God in a special way. Andrew was one of the disciples of John the Baptist, who decided to follow the Lord right after He was baptised at the Jordan. As such, he was the first one of the Apostles to be called and to respond to that call. He introduced his brother Simon, as well as the brothers, James and John, the sons of Zebedee to the Lord. They were all fishermen at the Lake of Galilee where they worked and laboured. After Andrew had stayed with Jesus and had learned much from Him, he did not keep this treasure to himself, but hastened to share it with his brother: "We have found the Messiah." His words show the power of the master who has convinced them of this truth. Today would be a wonderful day for us to reflect on the concrete individuals who have been “Apostles” for us, those sent by the Lord to bear witness by word and deed to the Lord. In addition to the marvels of the individuals who have brought us to deeper faith, we might pause to consider the long line of others who passed on the faith to us. Andrew’s words reveal a soul waiting with the utmost longing for the coming of the Messiah, looking forward to Him appearing from Heaven, rejoicing when He does appear and hastening to announce such great event to others. To support one another in the things of the spirit is the true sign of good will between brothers, of loving kinship and sincere affection.

May the Lord enter into our 'world' so that we may always experience the presence of God in all our lives! Amen!! Good morning and a joyful day!!!
