Do not let your hearts be troubled

Do not let your hearts be troubled

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Acts 14:19-28, Jn 14:27-31. Today's first reading, presents us with the description of the ministry of Paul and Barnabas, who moved out to new territory, to live in places that seemed outside the range of God’s people but that was so. Visiting small Churches that were struggling in a pagan environment, they renewed the people, encouraging them to persevere in the faith. They needed great courage in order to bring those people to Jesus. As Paul puts it, “We must undergo many trials to enter the reign of God.” However, along with bravery, we are also called to promote peace. This means forgiving others, accepting differences and building bridges. In today's Gospel, the words of Jesus remain, “Peace is my gift to you. Do not be afraid.” Jesus urged His disciples who were distressed at the prospect of losing Him, "Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid."

Today, we are challenged to be joyful in living out our faith. In this way, we can depend on the Holy Spirit. Among the names of the Holy Spirit are Comforter and Advocate, so we pray to Him to, "Heal our wounds, our strength renew; On our dryness pour thy dew." He knows that He will not physically be walking beside them as He has for the last years in their shared life on earth. Yet, He knows that He will be with them in and through His Holy Spirit. Life is full of many twist and turns, lots of changes. Yet in and through the Spirit, we are united as we follow the 'Way'-Jesus Christ. We may have to say farewell to some of our traveling companions – for a while – but those who follow the Way will be re-united when we get to our final destination – the house of our Heavenly Father who remains our source of hope.

May the Lord who promised to be with us to the end of time, stay with us throughout this day and remain with us forever as He pours out on us the Spirit that creates and renews! Amen!! Good morning and have a pleasant day!!!
