Jesus speaks with authority

Jesus speaks with authority

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

On this Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B, the Church continues to encourage us to listen attentively to Christ for He is our teacher who speaks with authority. In today's first reading, Moses addresses the people as he recalls the events that happened at the foot of Mt Sinai (Horeb). At that time they had been overwhelmed by God’s authority, when God communicates directly with the people (Ex. 19 and 20). The people no longer wanted to experience God personally, they would rather have God relay information by means of a human spokesperson like Moses. Moses reassures them that God will continue to teach them by means of another prophet, who, like Moses, will speak to the people on behalf of God. It is our responsibility to live out what we learn from Jesus as He teaches us to always speak of God.

There is a truth which Paul conveys to us in today's second reading. The truth that believers must not become too involved in the normal routine of non-believers. Non-believers lived only for selfish, worldly values, or values oriented toward living in this world and providing for one’s loved ones and family. Believers must not let any worldly ways interfere with following the Lord Jesus and preparing for His eventual return. From the events in today’s Gospel, it is clear that Jesus is the expected prophet, greater than Moses; for He taught the people of God in a new manner, filled with power and authority and they could see the difference themselves as compared to their teachers and Scribes. Jesus taught with authority, not only because He is God, but also because His words are always accompanied by His deeds and His deeds are invariably in consonance with His words. When He taught about love, He proved it by His example: “No greater love than for a man to give his life for his friends.” Indeed, He showed this when He willingly offered His life on the Cross for us, even “while we were still enemies” because of our sins (Cf. Rom. 5:8). God’s authority in our daily lives is important as this is relevant to life and ministry of Jesus Christ who speaks and act with authority.

May the teachings of Christ inspire us to accept His words and listen to God all the days of our lives! Amen!! Stay safe and happy Sunday!!!
