The Memorial of Saints Timothy and Titus

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Heb. 10:1-10, Mk 3:31-35. Fidelity to the will of God makes us strong members of the household of God. In today's Gospel, Jesus identifies the true disciple not by position, special privileges of birth, talents and financial resources, but by fidelity in the routines of life. We are asked to undertake all we do as though in the context of family life, regarding others as sister or brother, mother or father. At first, it seems to show Jesus breaking the family ties rather than forming a new one for His followers. When His mother Mary and other relatives went to Him, one might expect Him to drop everything else and devote all His attention to them. As clearly presented, there are moments when we should embrace our family circle and other moments when we turn outward to be of loving service to outsiders.

Jesus gives the example of these aspects: He is conscious of enlarging the horizons of the divine family by obedience to the will of God. Unlike the earthly family that is limited to privileges of birth, the requirement for admission into the divine family is fidelity to God. The invitation to this new family extends to all who are humble to sit at the feet of Jesus to learn. Today, we are challenged to be faithful to the word of God and regard others as our brothers, sisters, mother or father. The prompting of the Lord is usually found in the small events of life and in concern for others. In their concern for the wellbeing of others, Saints Timothy and Titus whose memorial we celebrate joined the missionary endeavours of Paul. Timothy and Titus were converted to Christianity by Paul and became his companions and helpers. Paul entrusted Timothy with the care of the Christians in Ephesus and sent Titus to Crete to look after the Christians there. He wrote them the “pastoral” epistles, giving advice for pastors and people alike.

May Christ our hope and courage, sustain us throughout the day and make us fervent and obedient members of the divine family! Amen!!! Remain safe, Peace be with you!!!
