The Transfiguration of the Lord

The Transfiguration of the Lord

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Dan. 7: 9-10.13-14; 2 Pt. 1:16-19, Mt. 17:1-9. Today we celebrate the Transfiguration where Jesus revealed His true nature as the Divine Son of God, shining forth from His humanity, unveiling that He is not just a Man, but more than a Man, He is the great Son of God incarnate in the flesh. Today's first reading describes the “Son of Man” coming in glory and light to the throne of the Ancient One. The Psalmist speaks of the Lord as the 'Ruler who comes in glory and power'. In the second reading, Peter recalls the Transfiguration of Jesus on mountain Tabor. Today's Gospel presents us with the experience of the Transfiguration, where Peter, James and John are able to see who Jesus really is.

Reflecting on the experience, years later, Peter would write: “We had seen his majesty for ourselves. He was honoured and glorified by God the Father, when the Sublime Glory itself spoke to him” (1 Pet. 1:17). In the Transfiguration scene, the cloth of Jesus became “dazzlingly white, whiter than any earthly bleacher could make them.” This whiteness represented His Divinity manifested to the disciples. The presence of Moses and Elijah symbolically represent the Law and the Prophets and it highlights the fact that Jesus was indeed the perfect fulfilment of the Law of God and the promises that He made through His prophets. The glorious Transfiguration is the revelation of what we will be, if we keep our lives holy and dedicated to God, as Paul says: "We will all not die, but we will all be transformed" and "those who have died, in the end of days, will be raised to live forever." Today, Jesus desires us to “know” the glory of God and be transformed. We are sometimes given glimpses of what that glory means. Those experiences are meant to bolster our faith and keep us headed along the right path as we journey along the way to God. It is only in God that we will experience the full transformation where we can die to our pride and ego, greed and worldly desires, attachments to worldly pleasures and all things that keep us away from reaching true holiness in God.

May we be empowered by the continued revelation of God that will lead us to an increased dedication to God! Amen!! Remain safe and have a glorious day!!!
