OUR LIFE IS FOR SERVICE BY BISHOP ODETOYINBO

THE BISHOP OF Abeokuta Diocese, Most Rev. Peter Odetoyinbo, says diaconate ordination reminds us that our life is for service.

Bishop Odetoyinbo made this statement at the diaconate ordination of Revs George Erumeste and Daniel Damisah of Congregation of Oblates of the Virgin Mary (Queen of the Holy Rosary Delegation, Nigeria) at Sacred Heart, Ilupeju, Bodija, Ibadan on 16 December.

As Christians, said Bishop Odetoyinbo, we can claim blessings when we serve, and in humility for a servant of God has nothing, and he is a victim as Christ was a victim having sacrificed himself for mankind on the cross.

The life of a priest, he said, is dignified inasmuch as he remains a sacrificial lamb. His only status is in Christ; his identity is of service to mankind and, like a servant, he is to promote Christ in his way of life; always on the Tabernacle to adore Jesus.

Most times, he added, some of the priests live as victors instead of victims; Christ is a victim and remains that always.

He admonished them not to pursue material things but remain in the vows of chastity and poverty.

His advice: Be wary of receiving gifts which may make you independent doing whatever you like and going wherever you like.

The bishop told them to be devoted like their founder by protecting, promoting and preserving their congregation.

He appreciated their parents who gave them to the Church, and prayed God to reward them abundantly.

Bishop Odetoyinbo also appreciated all that came for the ceremony including the priests, religious, seminarians, and faithful of St Leo’s Catholic Church, Ikoga Zebbe.

Rev. Fr Nonso Onyemeh, assistant national director, OMV, gave the vote of thanks.

At the reception, the chairman of the occasion, Sir Francis Ogini (KSM), showcased the joy of the parish.
