The Feast of the Chair of St Peter

The Feast of the Chair of St Peter

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

1 Pet. 5:1-4, Mt. 16:13-19. Today, we celebrate “Cathedra Petri” (the Chair of Peter in Rome) whom God had entrusted the governance and authority over His universal Church. Like that of the other Bishops, the seat of St Peter is the symbol of the authority which has been given to the Bishop over the entire flock in the Diocese. Thus, the admonition of Peter in today's first reading becomes relevant for our reflection: "Be the shepherds of the flock of God that is entrusted to you: watch over it... Never be a dictator over any group that is put in your charge, but be an example that the whole flock can follow." In the opening verse, Peter calls himself a “sym-presbyteros” a fellow-elder. This epistle identifies Peter’s role as assistant to Christ the Chief Shepherd, rather than as lawgiver, oracle or pontiff.

The word that is synonymous to shepherd is ‘care’. Shepherds of the flock of God; in the Church or in the family, should care for His sheep. We are challenged to know them and seek them out, whatever be the cost. We are called to give our people what their souls need, even when they do not know what they need. Today’s Feast invites us to pray for divine guidance on our present Pope and on the whole Church of God throughout the world. We look forward to a new era of hopeful, life-affirming Catholicism, led and encouraged by a fraternal Papal ministry, mirroring the noble example of St Peter.

May the Lord bless our Pope Francis, Bishops, Priests and all who have given themselves to the service of the Gospel and strengthen our faith, that though we may falter as Peter once did, we may grow stronger in faith and become immovable like a rock, with steadfast and undying devotion! Amen!! Good morning and have a pleasant day!!!
