The measure you give will be the measure you get

The measure you give will be the measure you get

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

2 Sam. 7:18-19.24-29, Mk 4:21-25. We hear David thanking God for giving the royal honour to him and his family in today's first reading, little did he realize how the divine promises would be fulfilled on a higher plane when Jesus took his place as king, at the Father’s right hand. In a way beyond David’s understanding, these prophetic words were fulfilled: “the measure you give will be the measure you get.” Thus, today's Gospel calls for generosity, “in full measure”, if we are to taste the promised fullness of grace, “still more will be given you.” By staying close to Jesus, our lamp will not stay hidden but will be set on a lampstand. We must not hide the light of our faith but let it shine out. We need to show our relationship with Christ by the way we live our lives.

On the other hand, we are not to parade our piety in order to win credit from others. What is needed is a quiet faithfulness, to live in truth and give glory to God. We have twofold responsibility to the truth: to know the truth and share it. A lamp is to be set in the most conspicuous place for all to see. Light is a symbol for truth. We need to witness to the truth in our life and share it, so that others may come to know the truth, light and meaning of life. If anyone tries to hide the light of truth it will break forth one day. At the same time, we must make sure that we hear the truth. Today we confront assault of many voices through social media, politics and new set of philosophies. It is a task for us to distinguish the truth from falsehood. We must pay attention, take effort and discern to verify the truth. Jesus encourages us to share the Gospel and if we fail, it is damaging like a lamp under a bed.

May the Lord make us heralds of truth so that we may be true light of the world! Amen!! Good morning and have a great day!!!
