Come and see

Come and see

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

1 Jn 3:7-10, Jn 1:35-42. The narrative about the vocation of Andrew and John in today's Gospel combines a surface simplicity with challenging depth. Their call can be compared and contrasted to the call of the fishermen by the lake-shore, but they bring out extra dimensions in the call to follow Jesus. On the one side we see the influence of others, in this case, John the Baptist, pointing towards Jesus, inviting us to see and admire what he has to offer. On the other side, our own desires and questions also come into it. Jesus invites Andrew and John to express their deepest hopes and aspirations in a question: “What are you looking for?”

There is no religious vocation without that inner quest which demands satisfaction.
Their first reply is superficial, not really naming what they expected from Him. At first, they addressed Him as a 'Rabbi'. After A moment of spiritual encounter with Jesus, they proclaimed Him as the Messiah and this becomes the heralds of the Good News. Our ultimate search is to experience our identity in the Divine and return to Him. Today, Jesus invites us to "come and see". To look at God and God looks at us, so that we empty ourselves in God and God empties His Divinity in us. We become one with God when we live a holy life as today's first reading tells us: "No-one sins who has been begotten by God."

May the Lord draw us to His side so that we may take our gaze from vain glory and fame and be led to true satisfaction and happiness! Amen!! Good morning, it is well with you!!!
