Christ, the Universal King

Christ, the Universal King

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

2 Sam. 5:1-3, Col. 1:12-20, Lk. 23:35-43. On this Thirty Fourth and last Sunday in Ordinary Time Year C, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, the universal King. Today, we adore Him as the King of kings and the Lord of lords (Rev. 17:1), and we exalt Him as the sovereign ruler of the universe (Dan. 7:14). Christ the universal King is a role model to all kings, rulers, presidents, decision makers and leaders. He cares, loves and lives in peace with His people. He does not rule with iron fists, military might, or financial strength. He is a Good Shepherd, a Just Judge and a compassionate King. He is the only King who treats us as His brothers, sisters and friends.

In today's first reading, the entire Israelites united in making David king because they saw in him a worthy servant. He did not impose himself on them. He did not need to waste much money and resources to be chosen, rather, he was genuinely and unanimously acclaimed their king. In the second reading, Paul reminds us that God: “has created a place for us in the kingdom of the son that he loves.” As we celebrate today, let us know that as we make known the glorious splendour of the reign of Christ that we are proclaiming our own reign over this world and its forces. Today's Gospel presents Jesus sitting on the most unusual throne, the Cross. ‘King of the Jews’ was written over His head. This can teach us that to bring about the Kingdom of God, we have to abandon what the world considers important and be prepared to be ridiculed as Jesus was on the Cross. This feast is an invitation to all those who have power or authority of any kind to compare their use of power or authority with that of Jesus.

May the Lord help all the nations and individuals to be humble enough to look at how Jesus used power to bring about the Kingdom of God! Amen!! Good morning and happy Sunday!!!
