Happy are those who are aware of their responsibilities

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Rom. 6:12-18, Lk. 12:39-48. Today's readings challenge us to stay vigilant and resist the temptation to sin. Sin is a very dangerous threat to us and if we allow sin to have its way in us, we will end up being dragged deeper and deeper into the darkness of sin and in the end, we have nothing left but eternal regret and despair. In today's first reading, Paul reminds us that we truly belong to God and to Him alone we must pay allegiance. It is when we allow ourselves to be tempted and swayed by ephemeral things that we can end up falling into sin and damnation. We are called to resist the temptation and urge to sin, restraining the desires of our body and mind. As these temptations can easily lead us astray and make us forget what we ought to be doing with our lives. Everyone is given a task to accomplish and a responsibility to carry out. Happy are you if you are aware of the demands of the responsibility entrusted to you.

Today's Gospel invites us to reflect on how well we can fulfil the works that are entrusted to us and what attitudes prevail in the conduct of our duties. The servant in the Gospel took his leisure in the absence of his master and acted as a hypocrite. A person can do things just to impress others and out of compulsions. Jesus, on the other hand, appreciates the works that are done from the heart and seeking only the benefit of the other. God will hold us responsible for the responsibilities, gifts and talents He has entrusted to us. At the same time, Jesus warns us of the dangers of misusing the power and authority assigned to us which are meant only for serving others.

May the Lord teach us to see God in everyone and may He give us the spirit of forgiveness and a generous heart! Amen!! Good morning and have a wonderful day!!!
