St Therese of Lisieux

St Therese of Lisieux

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Neh. 8:1-12, Lk. 10:1-12. There is a sense of urgency in today’s readings, calling on people to choose their basic purpose in life. In the first reading, Ezra gathers all the people, young and old, to hear God’s will for them, through the Torah that Moses received. In today's Gospel, Jesus sends out the seventy-two disciples with no provisions, but with an urgent mission to announce that God is near. Ezra foresees a long stretch of history on earth. He tries to prepare his people by renewing the Covenant of Israel, based on God’s written law, while Jesus predicts that human hopes would soon be fulfilled in the reign of God.

We need those two perspectives, making a fundamental option and doing some planning for the future. Like the president of a country who wishes to visits another nation, will dispatch a batch of diplomats who will prepare the ground and set the tone for the presidential visit. Jesus sends ahead of Him seventy-two disciples in pairs to various towns and cities which He is to visit later. For those towns and cities, the visit of the disciples will be the preparatory ground for the ministry of Jesus later. Thus, the disciples are to put on the mind of Christ and embody His Gospel. St Therese of Lisieux whose memorial we celebrate, embodied the Gospel of Christ in all it richness in her many excellent writings, that earn her the dignity of the Doctor of the Church.
Therese was a Discalced Carmelite nun who was renowned for her ‘Little Way’ or the ‘Little Way of St Therese of Lisieux’, which is why she was also known as the ‘Little Therese.'

May the Lord give us strength in our weakness and courage when we meet problems! Amen!! Good morning and have a pleasant day!!!
