The Memorial of Andrew Kim Tægon and Companions

1 Tim. 6:2-12, Lk. 8:1-3. In a world that is obsessed with pursuit for wealth and prestige, the admonition of Paul in the first reading becomes apt. He reminds us to walk righteously before God and follow Him wholeheartedly without being distracted by worldly temptations of glory, fame, wealth and possessions. We must do our best to walk faithfully in God’s path and persevere in this path: "We brought nothing into the world and can take nothing out of it." There are many of those who are motivated and inspired by the love for money and the world, they are powerful and numerous, but this should not discourage us from remaining true and faithful. In contrast, a number of women show their motivation in their service to God in today’s Gospel. As Jesus made His way through towns and villages preaching, several women provided for Him out of their own resources.

The service of these women enabled Him to serve others effectively. If Jesus accepted the help of others, we also need to accept it. We are called to serve, but also, to accept the service of others, because we really need their help. Serving others calls for generosity and letting ourselves be served calls for humility. We have something worthwhile to give and to receive. Let us be grateful to those who journey with us and help us through life. We recall today the great inspiration of the Korean martyrs, a multitude of saints and martyrs who suffered and shed their blood for remaining true to God and refusing to renounce Him and their faith in Him. Andrew Kim Tægon, Paul Chong Hasang among many others were the local converts, some like St Andrew Kim Tægon became priests and were martyred for remaining resolute in opposing the effort to make the Christians to renounce their faith.

May the Lord recreate through us a new world where injustice and destruction will give way to growth, freedom and hope! Amen!! Good morning and have a wonderful day!!!
