The Memorial of St CHRYSOSTOM

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

1 Tim. 1:1-2.12-14, Lk. 6:39-42. We are meant to interact with one another, not as superior-to-inferior but as equals in God’s family, each recognizing the gifts of the other. What Paul says of himself in the first reading, that he was appointed to the service of God, applies to each of us. He admits that he realised his vocation only after years when he “acted ignorantly in unbelief.” We may also act in ignorance or misguided zeal and treat others arrogantly. We have also, like Paul, received the grace of God in full measure. If grace could make such a change in Paul’s life, it can do the same for us to be able to lead well and never be a blind guide.

To be arrogant makes us a blind trying to guide another blind person. Each of us needs the wisdom of others to balance our special insights and strengths. We need the wisdom of others to keep us united and to be effective at the service of the Lord. Our limited insight of others makes it dangerous to make judgements about them. St John Chrysostom whose memorial we celebrate had the insight of many Church Fathers and he became a very influential leader of the Church and he is remembered for his eloquent preaching and teachings of the faith against heresies and falsehoods which earned him the name “Chrystostom”, “Golden mouth”. He is also remembered for his great stand and commitment to God in opposition to abuse of worldly power and human ambitions, serving God faithfully despite the challenges that he faced throughout his life and ministry. He had to go through many years of trouble, before and during his tenure as the Archbishop of Constantinople. However, he did not give up or allow those challenges to prevent him from remaining resolute and true to his faith.

May the Lord help us by His grace to appreciate the love of others and avoid every form of negativity! Amen!! Good morning and have a wonderful day!!!
