Do not worry about tomorrow

Do not worry about tomorrow

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

2 Cor. 12:1-10, Mt. 6:24-34. In today's first reading, Paul affirms that if we are to boast, it would be best to boast of God's providence not of our human power, abilities, greatness or achievements. Paul gave an example, through his own tireless ministry and hard work among the people he did not glorify himself or his own achievements, he continued to glorify and praise God. He mentioned the temptations and difficulties he faced, the temptations of pride and greed in his heart. He remain human, prone to being tempted by all these wicked and negative feelings, emotions and desires just as we are. Paul records that in answer to his prayer the Lord replied, “My grace is enough for you, for power comes to perfection in weakness” (2 Cor. 12:9).

Knowing his weakness led Paul to discover a source of strength beyond any gift and talent of his own. His weakness led him deeper into prayer and dependence on God, as expressed in the word of Jesus in today's Gospel: "Don’t worry about tomorrow. Your heavenly Father knows all that you need.” Enough for the day, let tomorrow take care of itself. It is more vital to live today than to worry about tomorrow. Life is more important than food, the body more valuable than clothes. We need to review our values and goals, “Look at the birds in the sky. They do not sow or reap, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they?” Selfish desires lead to all sorts of trouble, but as Paul points out, weakness turns into strength when it brings us to prayer and trust in God and the memory of God’s goodness.

May the Lord deliver us from every anxiety and may each new day increase our trust in God! Amen!! Good morning and Happy Weekend!!!
