Poor, yet enriching many

Poor, yet enriching many

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

2 Cor. 6:1-10, Mt. 5:38-42. In today’s first reading, Paul encourages the Corinthians faithful to remain steadfast in living their faith and become good examples for others. At a time when some Church members in Corinth were criticising Paul for not coming to make another visit, he tells them: "We are called imposters, and yet we are truthful; nobodies but in fact are well known; considered dead, yet here we are alive; punished, but not put to death; sorrowful, though always rejoicing; poor, yet enriching many; seeming to have nothing, yet everything is ours.” His unswerving obedience to his mission eventually found him numbered among the pillars of the Church.

We are priveleged to have such witnesses within our family of faith and thank God for the inspiration of Paul. The ideals of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount are exemplified for us in a dramatic way by Paul’s apostolate, in the perseverance and huge level of generosity of spirit, going the extra mile, turning the other cheek and sharing whatever he had with others. Today's Gospel invites us not to fight back, “when someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other to him as well.” This is a very difficult invitation but it calls us to be humble and forgiving. Jesus challenges us to resist evil with the righteousness of God through humility and forgiveness. This is the ultimate way for us to end the cycle of violence, revenge, killing, fighting and other forms of vices.

May the Lord continue to guide us through this journey of life, bless us in our every endeavours and our every actions, words and deeds! Amen!! Good morning and have a fruitful day!!!
