Treasure in Earthen Vessels

Treasure in Earthen Vessels

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

2 Cor. 4:7-15, Mt. 5:27-32. Two phrases stand out in today’s readings, “treasure in earthen vessels” and “whoever looks lustfully at another”. In the words of Paul, we are only “clay jars,” not immune from suffering or temptation. We continue to live in hope, in spite of whatever may happen in our lives: “Afflicted in every way but not crushed; full of doubts, but not despairing; persecuted, but not destroyed.” The treasure of our faith is waiting to be unveiled. The choice is ours whether we want to keep this treasure inside us and leave it as it is, or allow that treasure to be shown forth and grow. In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus proposes genuine ideals that is not literally to gouge out an eye or to hack off a hand, lest they  lead us into temptation.

What Jesus says about adultery, whether in the heart or put into action, must be taken seriously, as an expression of the will of God. He sets up ideals for us, so that when we undergo doubts and confusion, there is always a precious guideline for us, as long as we live in “earthen vessels.” This image of tearing out our right eye links back to His view on adultery not just as a physical act but as an intention or a desire: “whoever looks at a woman lustfully.” Today, Jesus invites us to consider the roots of wicked actions, arising from the passions of our human heart. This is the deeper virtue that He referred to. What the Lord wants of us is not just a change of behaviour but a change of heart, a purifying of desire and intention. This interior transformation draws us closer to the Lord and create in us a heart that reflects the heart of Jesus.

May the Lord grant us the grace to live in newness of life and give us the insight to see His hand at work in all things! Amen!! Good morning and have a blessed day!!!
