Mary Mother of the Church

Mary Mother of the Church

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Gen. 3:9-15.20, Jn 19:25-34. Today, we celebrate the memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church as it was included by Pope Francis in March 2018, into the Roman Calendar. This memorial is to be celebrated each year on Monday after Pentecost to encourage the growth of the maternal sense of the Church in the pastors, religious and faithful, as well as a growth of genuine Marian piety. This feast is closely linked to Mary’s being at the heart of that prayerful group of disciples in the upper room, awaiting the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:14).

Specifically, her maternal role towards Christ’s faithful is found in today's Gospel as Jesus said on the Cross to the Beloved Disciple, who represents all future disciples: "Behold your mother" (John 19:27). By this action, the whole Church, represented by Apostle John, was entrusted to Mary, to be the Mother. She constantly prays and watches over us from Heaven with her loving eyes and thoughts for us. In Mary, we see the perfect example of faith, perfect obedience and commitment to God, in contrast to what we have in today's first reading on the downfall of man into sin: Adam and Eve, succumbed to the temptations of the evil one and disobeyed God for their own selfish desire, pride and greed. Mary instead, showed humility, obedience and love for God.

May the Lord help us to build our community in justice and peace, heal the sick, comfort the afflicted and bring all men to salvation! Amen!! Good morning, have a productive week!!!
