Waiting for the Paraclete

Waiting for the Paraclete

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Acts 25:13-21, Jn 21:15-19. In today's first reading, Paul places an appeal before the governor of Judea to be tried when he was accused by the Jewish authorities. Paul made this appeal as he held up his right as a Roman citizen to be tried by the Emperor. He dedicated himself to the service of God, spending years preaching the word of God among the people and facing dangers along the way throughout his ministry. Like Paul, Peter was also forgiven and called by God to be His shepherd. In today’s Gospel, Jesus called Peter to renew his commitment and three times asked: “Do you love me?”

Only when Peter answers with remorse and new self-awareness: “Lord, you know everything,” does Jesus commission him to feed His sheep. Love, contrition and obedience to the Lord’s prompting, became the hallmarks of his ministry afterwards. Though, Peter speaks with authority, with so much patience, which is clearly reflected in his epistle when he writes “I, who am an elder myself, appeal to the Church elders among you” (1 Pet. 5:1). He is able to love and be loved, humble and open to others in their ideas and talents, aware of sin and able to appreciate the weakness of others and ready to obey Jesus at all costs. God gives us the same opportunity and calls us back if, for whatever reason, we have drifted away. Our life as believers is a moment of grace, a moment when that question is addressed to us in a special way. It is a privilege opportunity for us to respond to that question and renew our communion with the Lord if we have broken it.

May the Lord send His Holy Spirit to bring order out of chaos, love out of hatred and be our guide, so that in everything we say and do, we will always bring greater glory to God! Amen!! Good morning, it is well with you!!!
