The Memorial of St Charles Lwanga

The Memorial of St Charles Lwanga

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Acts 19:1-8, Jn 16:29-33. Today, we reflect on God’s wonderful love and providence. God will not abandon His beloved and faithful ones in the dark and He will protect them from harm that causes eternal suffering and destruction. Paul enjoyed such grace as he made his way overland to Ephesus, one of the most beautiful and largest cities in Asia Minor, where he found a number of disciples. With courage, Paul was so resolute to clarify the difference between the Christian and Jewish Baptism. With a fuller knowledge of the effect of the Holy Spirit, about twelve men prophecy when they were baptised in the name of Jesus. To be baptised in the "Name" of Jesus means to bear the identity of Jesus.

In today's Gospel, Jesus invites us to bear His identity everywhere, especially when suffering and trails knock at our doors. Our trust and faith in God should be strong enough to withstand temptations and pressures of the world, such that our faith cannot be shaken. The Holy Spirit has been poured into our hearts. Even when alone, we are always in the presence of God, we are living members of that wonderful family of love. This awareness can bring us a deep peace, a peace the world cannot give. St Charles Lwanga whose memorial we celebrate experienced such peace even when he suffered persecution. His courage and zeal amidst suffering, trials and martyrdom is legendary. Charles Lwanga and companions, the martyrs of the Church in Uganda, have shown great courage and dedication to the Lord, in the work they performed.

May the Lord be with us and grant us the strength and courage to live our lives faithfully from now on, following the examples of the holy Ugandan martyrs! Amen!! Good morning and have a productive week!!!
