St Joseph, the worker

St Joseph, the worker

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Acts 5:17-26, Jn 3:16-21. Today, we celebrate the memorial of St Joseph, the Worker and in some countries, today is aptly marked “Workers' Day.” We mark this day to acclaim the dignity in labour. Thus, we remember St Joseph as one who was called to participate in God’s creative and redemptive works. Caring for the Son of God and providing for the Holy Family of Nazareth. A worker such as St Joseph is not a mere lump of labour, he is a human being and created in God’s own image. Just as creation is an activity of God, so creation is an activity of the worker. The work we do echoes the glorious work that God has done.

Today's Gospel is one of the greatest assurance of the love of God in the Scripture. For, it sums up succinctly the plan of God for the salvation of the human race. God wants everyone to come to know and believe in Him through Jesus Christ so that everyone may merits eternal life. It is important to note that this project of God involves only blessing and salvation, not condemnation. God comes into the world as its light, but we can choose to love darkness and hide from God’s light thereby heaping up condemnation on ourselves, a condemnation which is a natural consequence of our choice. God does not discriminate, but we do -by our choices. If there is any choice that we must make today is to participate in God's creative act in our work.

May the Lord bless the work of our hands and make us full of gratitude for the great love we enjoy! Amen!! Good morning and happy workers' day!!!
