The Lord will always vindicate us

Dan. 13:1-9.15-17.19-30.33-62, Jn 8:12-20. Today's first reading presents the story of Susanna, an innocent and pious woman who was accused by two elders. These elders allowed lust affect their judgment of action and this made them commit sin in their hearts and minds. For such senior member of the community to have fallen into such wickedness is a reminder for us that we should not take the tendency to fall into sin for granted. The lust and greed to have the beautiful Susanna made them to desire her. As Susanna refused to be party to their immoral action, they were taken over by their sins. Instead of turning away from their sinfulness, they ended up making false accusations before the people against an innocent person.

In Susanna’s prayer, we see a deep personal faith: “she trusted in the Lord with all her heart.” By contrast, lust drove her accusers to suppress their conscience, letting desire drive mercy and justice from their thoughts. Her story shows great personal dignity and composure, even in moments of critical danger. Things may look bleak but the Lord is always near. Susanna prayed: “Eternal God, you know what is hidden and are aware of all things.” She did not lash out angrily against her accusers or fell to pieces. Instead she trusted God and bravely affirmed what she knew to be true, even with the evidences piled up against her. We need wisdom to know when to choose silence, hoping that with God’s help, justice will prevail. Jesus becomes our light, witness and justification in times of troubles. To affirm that Jesus is our light, He assures us in today's Gospel that He knows the inner heart of things, because He is guided and enlightened by the Heavenly Father. This is why He makes this splendid promise: “Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
