Be a Reconciled to God

Be a Reconciled to God

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Josh. 5:9-12, I Cor. 5:1-21, Lk. 15:1-3.11-23. On this fourth Sunday of Lent also known as "Lætare" Sunday Year C, the Church encourages us to: “Rejoice” as Christ reconciles us with His Father. That is why the readings create a confluent theme: "Be reconciled to God." Today's first reading narrates the entering of the chosen people into the promised land. As Israel prepared for battle, Joshua had all the men of military age circumcised in keeping with the covenant. The gift of Manna also ends for them as they reconciled with God, for they do not need a special food any longer. This reconciliation preceded the military attacks on Jericho; Jericho fell not from the military tactics but through an act of God with the obedient cooperation of His people: a fruit of reconciliation.

In today’s Gospel, through the story of the prodigal son, Jesus reassures us of God’s readiness to reconcile with us. The parable of the prodigal son is the story of a loving father and a humble and repentant son. It is the story of reconciliation at its best. Most importantly, it reflects our own daily story and struggle. Therefore, this season we must constantly seek reconciliation with God through Christ. This is what Paul means in the second reading, when he appeals to us to be reconciled to God. He simply asks us to realise who we are and change our mind like the prodigal son. So, we must cast away all shame and pride in order to be reconciled with God and others through Christ. Through His Church, Christ has made things easy for us. He has given us the sacrament of penance as a means of constant reconciliation to God.

May the Lord help us in this season of Lent to bring about true change within us, as we reconcile with God and others! Amen!! Good morning and happy Sunday!!!
