Give to the Most Hight as He has given to you

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Eccles. 35:2-15, Mk 10:28-31. One of the arguments raised by religious adherence is whether we become rich because we give to God or we are rich so that we might give to God. The paradox of losing something in order to gain something else appear as the hallmark of today's readings. The first reading affirms: "Give to the Most High as he has given to you, generously as your means can afford; for the Lord is a good rewarder, he will reward you seven times over". This austere paradox is echoed in today’s Gospel, where Jesus expresses the 'no pain, no gain' philosophy. The rich young man of today's Gospel was ready to be a disciple in every other way: the learning, the travelling, the companionship, but not the renunciation of ownership.

This shows how we could be possessed by our possessions. The goods of this life can hold us captive unless they are enjoyed in a spirit of service and sharing with our neighbour. There are many things that we need to die to: subtle emotional attachments, love for name and fame, desire for security, fear of rejection and thousand-headed ego. What is needed is not merely giving up everything we have, but everything we are so that we can gain all. We need not be afraid to give up something meaningful for the sake of Christ. We stand to gain much already on earth and eternal life when we give generously to God.

May the Lord inflame our hearts to be generous and raise our hope in His love, so that we may recognise Him in the daily events of our life! Amen!! Good morning, have a joyful day!!!
