What must I do to inherit eternal life?

What must I do to inherit eternal life?

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

In today's Gospel, a practicing young Jew came to Jesus seeking to know how to ensure eternal life: "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life"? Though it seems to be a good question, it is nevertheless a wrong one because we do not “do” anything to inherit something. Inheritance is not predicated on doing something. Inheritance is solely predicated on being somebody. We can inherit our parents’ property not because we “do” something, but because we “are” somebody in relation to them. We inherit eternal life, not because we do something, but because we are children of God.

Our faith is not primarily a matter of doing good; it is not even about being good; it is all about being loved: love God and do whatever you want. If we love God, then everything we do will be influenced by that love. Sincere love for Jesus will get us away from pride. Today, we are challenged to strive to be rich with the treasures of Heaven and not with possessions of this world. We are called to share in and reflect the super-abundance of God’s generosity to others.

May the Lord protect us from slavery and may our possessions or positions never stand on our way in heeding to the word of God! Amen!! Good morning, have a productive week!!!
