Divorce disregards the Sanctity of Marriage

Divorce disregards the Sanctity of Marriage

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Eccles. 6:5-17, Mk 10:1-12. Today, we are challenged to believe in God and have a genuine love for Him. Unless we have that love and devotion, it is unlikely that we will be able to live our lives with faith. Today's first reading tells us how our friends could make or mar our relationship with God. Some of those who became our friends, did so because they seek gains for themselves and when things go sour and fortunes dwindle, they are quick to draw a line and distance themselves from us. The friendship of this type cannot be called true friendship, as it means that the friendship is only valid when things are favourable. Today’s Gospel presents us with a higher level of relationship: the relationship between a man and a woman joined together in holy matrimony.

The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the Law tried to test Jesus by arguing that since Moses had allowed divorce, it should be allowed generally. For Jesus, such a marriage disregards the sanctity of marriage and the original intention of God. In such marriage, the devil is very quick to make use of the slightest opportunity to strike, by making use of pride, ego, desire and wickedness within our hearts and minds against us. On this day we are reminded of the need to be filled with genuine love instead of lust, dedication instead of selfishness and pride, compassion instead of greed and worldly desires.

May the Lord strengthen us and guide us all to love Him and serve Him with greater commitment, now and always! Amen!! Good morning and have a fruitful new month!!!
