When we get expended we need to refill

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Heb. 13:15-17.20-21, Mk 6:30-34. Rest is a necessity for the body just as a car that is overused can break down easily. There is a story told of two men who bet on whom would chop more firewood than the other. One stayed restful while he sharpened his axe while the other worked nonstop. At the end of the day the restful one chopped more woods than the other. Though the Bible approves of good deeds, it prominently approves of rest. God in chapter three of Genesis declared the Sabbath Day Holy on which all must rest. God knows that rest is necessary for our spiritual and physical growth.

Jesus in today's Gospel took His disciples to a lonely place to rest for awhile. In Jn 9:4 Jesus emphasises on work but here He recommends rest. In Ps 46:10 says “be still and know that I am God”. Jesus knows that when we get expended we need to refill. Before He began His ministry He went to a desert and stayed out of work listening to God. To really live a life of prayer we need to hear from God. However, compassion must not be sacrificed on the altar of rest. As Jesus looked around on the crowd, He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. His loving response was to animate them by His teaching and feed them through the miracle of the loaves and fishes.

May the Lord make us ready to do His will in good action and turn us into whatever that is acceptable to God! Amen!! Good morning and happy weekend!!!
