Wednesday after Epiphany

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

1 Jn 4:11-18, Mk 6:45-52. Today's first reading continues with the theme “GOD IS LOVE" and adds that "love has no room for fear; rather perfect love casts out all fear... love is not yet perfect in one who is afraid". In today’s Gospel, the disciples of Jesus experience strong storm around their boat on the Sea of Galilee. Though they had experienced the feeding of the thousands, they did not comprehend its meaning. At this time, Jesus sends them across the lake by boat without going with them. They began to panic as they were afraid of drowning, though four of them were experienced fishermen and must have been caught out on a stormy sea many times. They were not yet perfect in love, so they were afraid until 'Love' comes walking to them on the water.

In the midst of a raging wind that tossed about the disciples, Jesus greets them with His reassuring presence: “Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid”. In life we may have the opportunity to witness the 'multiplication of loaves and fish' or 'experience the violent wind'. Be it a moment of 'wow or a moment of freezing fear', we must never forget that 'born for us is Emmanuel' – God with us; He accompanies us through life; "For in Him we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28). Only the presence of Jesus can calm our storm and fears.

May the Lord bless us with His love which casts out fear that debilitate us and help us to stay focused on the loving presence of God so that we may face the challenges which confront us! Amen!! Good morning and have a glorious day!!!
