The Cross is a prerequisite for our salvation

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Phil. 2:12-18, Lk. 14:25-33. The Cross is the essential mark of our faith because, it is the 'vehicle' for the redemption of the world. Even if the Cross remains a stumbling block or a sign of failure, shame and defeat to many, it is for us a prerequisite to follow Christ. In today's Gospel, Jesus emphasises on the Christian meaning of pain and suffering: "Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple". For believers, the Cross is not optional but a way that leads to life. If we collaborate with the salvific mission of Christ by accepting pains, suffering and difficulties of ordinary life, we share in the inner life of Christ.

The Lord permits suffering in our life for the purpose of our sanctification and that we may be active participants in the work of Salvation. In the words of St Paul in today's first reading, we are challenge to work for our salvation ‘in fear and trembling'. This means that we must work with awe and seriousness in the service of God. Towards this end Paul gives us further ethical implications for daily life: "Do all that has to be done without complaining or arguing and then you will be innocent and genuine, perfect children of God among a deceitful and underhand brood, and you will shine in the world like bright stars because you are offering it the word of life".

May the Lord grant us the courage to be steadfast in faith so that we may receive the promises of God without obstacle! Amen!! Good morning, It is well with you!!!
