Take nothing for the Journey

Take nothing for the Journey

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Prov. 30:5-9, Lk. 9:1-6. Today's Gospel narrates the call and mission of the twelve. Jesus calls and empowers them, passes on to them His authority, so that with His power they can proclaim the Kingdom of God, exorcise demons and heal the sick. Apart from curing the sick and liberating the victims of slavery in its manifestations, Jesus sends them to proclaim the Good News to the ends of the earth.

Jesus expects His followers to continue His work when He returns to the Father and prepares them for special mission. He gives them specific instructions so that they will know what to do. They are to take nothing for their journey. He tells them how to cope with tough times and insists on absolute material detachment. Wisdom of God in Proverbs taught us to detach ourselves from excessive acquisition of wealth. Authentic followers of Jesus rely on God, who provides their needs. Thus, the first reading assures us of God's providence over all who put their trust in Him: "Every word of God is unalloyed, he is the shield of those who take refuge in him".

May the Lord hear our prayer so that we may walk in the light and work for the truth as authentic witnesses! Amen!! Good morning and have a great day!!!
