Our Lady of Sorrows

Our Lady of Sorrows

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

OUR LADY OF SORROWS: 1 Cor. 10:14-22, Lk. 2:33-35. After the celebration of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, we commemorate today, the seven sorrows of Mary. The devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows flourished in the middle age and the hymn "Stabat Mater" was composed for it. In our time, we remember the special union that Mary shared in the Sacrifice of her Son on Calvary. According to the prophecy of Simeon in today's Gospel, Mary had her share of sorrow and suffering: "A sword will pass through your own soul, so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed" (Lk. 2:35).

When Mary saw the humiliation and suffering her Son was subjected to, she could not remain unaffected. She accompanied her Son to the foot of the Cross to offer the supreme sacrifice to God for the redemption of the world. We contemplate this momentous scene to remind us that we could also participate in the supreme sacrifice of Christ to redeem the world. As we celebrate the co-redemptive suffering of Mary today, we are invited to offer our many little difficulties and voluntary mortifications for the salvation of souls.

May the Lord help us by His grace to offer ourselves as living sacrifice to God! Amen!! Good morning and Happy Weekend!!
