No one tears a piece from an Old cloak to put it on a New cloak

No one tears a piece from an Old cloak to put it on a New cloak

1 Cor. 4:1-5, Lk. 5:33-39. Those who work in the service of God should not be concerned about popularity ratings. They should be aware that the Lord sees their work, intentions behind it and the Lord will reward them for their work in His service. Such people can say with St Paul in today's first reading: "It does not make the slightest difference to me whether you, or indeed any human tribunal, find me worthy or not". The question we should ask ourselves today is: am I unduly affected by what people say about me? Jesus tells us in today's Gospel that the rules on prayer or spirituality cannot be the same for everyone.

With the two imageries of 'new wine' and 'new garment', Jesus categorically affirms the newness that is present in His person and His message. The new life offered by Jesus is incompatible with the old traditions. Jesus is the new wine which cannot be put into old wineskins; He is the new garment which cannot be attached to the old clothe. Here, Jesus asserts that the Christian life cannot be limited to certain spirituality, but is a new style of relationship with God and with others. This new style of life is based on love. A life of relationship based on love of God and neighbour brings us real joy. Jesus relates this new life to a wedding feast. In the wedding feast, the participants cannot but be happy.

May the Lord who made all things and keeps all things in being, give us the insight to see His hand at work in all things! Amen!! Good morning, have a great day
