Doctrines & Morals

2 Thess. 3:6-10.16-18, Mk 6:17-29. Sometimes in life we find challenges after experiencing God's love. That is, in the warmth of the experience of God, we could sometimes find dark and lurking shadows. In the first reading, the Thessalonians found themselves in such situation at the wake of their faith-experience. Just as their faith in Jesus has just been lifted, the death of their fellow believers shook their faith because they were expecting Jesus to reward their faith soon. After a fruitful ministry of John the Baptist, one would think that he should have it good, but he was imprisoned and eventually killed. Though Herod had respected and feared John the Baptist as a great prophet and messenger of God, out of impulse and a desire to please his family and friends, had John beheaded.

Herod's conscience pricked him when he heard people discussing the rumour that John the Baptist has risen. When Herod heard about Jesus he supposed that John the Baptist, whom he had beheaded, had returned from the dead. Unfortunately for Herod, he could not get rid of his sin by eliminating the man who confronted him with his sin. Herod was weak. He took a strong stand on the wrong things when he knew the right, which was a sign of weakness and cowardice. Thus, God's grace enables us to overcome fear and weakness in the face of temptation.

May the Lord fortify us with faith and courage when we face adversity! Amen!! Good morning and have a gracious day!!!

Revd Fr Samuel Frederick.
