Mark 10:22; "When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions."

By REV. FR. PAUL ANIGBORO

In the gospel, the sin that Jesus is addressing is apathy, i.e., the lack of caring. Apathy is when we see a need that we can do something about but choose not to help. The rich man was a man of many possessions and he was unwilling to let them go. The anonymous rich young man was ready for other aspects of discipleship, perhaps: the learning, the travelling, the companionship–but not this stark call to renunciation.

The riches and talents of life can block us from entering heaven unless they are enjoyed in accordance with God’s will and in a spirit of service and of sharing with our neighbour. It may be hard but it's not impossible. Let us be willing to help those in need when we know we have the ability to do so.

Lord, help to realise that everything I have is a gift from you. May I overcome the evil of apathy and draw me closer to you. Bless this new week for me and Grant success to the works of my hands. Amen.

Good morning and do have a wonderful week ahead. God loves you.
