The Memorial of St Philip Neri

The Memorial of St Philip Neri

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Acts 20:17-27, Jn 17:1-11. Today's readings present us with the famous last words of Jesus and Paul as they completed their mission in life. Paul hopes to make a final visit to Jerusalem and then, if he survives that dangerous visit, he will make his way to Rome and possibly bring the Good News to Spain. In today's Gospel, Jesus declares that the work given to Him by His Father is fully done and He prays: “Father, give me glory at your side.” Paul offers parting advice to the leaders of the Church; while Jesus prays for them and for all who will join them in times to come. Today we take the place of those whom the Father gave to Jesus and whom He gave back to the Father. We dare to remind ourselves that the Father could never give the Son a worthless gift. That is the reason Jesus proclaimed that the "Glory has come to me through them."

The Glory of God consists in His being, presence and works. Thus, our lives should reveal the character and presence of God through our works. Let us serve with humility and self-emptying that Paul speaks of in today's first reading. His character and way of life is worthy of emulation in our lives as disciples of the Lord. Paul have no regrets in serving the Lord in every circumstance: “You know how… I served the Lord with humility through the sorrows and trials that came my way.” Paul faces an uncertain future, knowing that prison probably awaits him at Jerusalem. Today, we are challenged to face our uncertain future with faith and calmness, for when we finish the work given to us by the Father, God will take us to Himself. St Philip Neri whose memorial we celebrate was also famous for his extensive works in establishing the Confraternity of the Holy Trinity and Congregation of the Oratory. Philip Neri was born into a noble and wealthy family, but he chose to abandon everything after God had called him into a life dedicated to the service of the poor and the sick in the city of Rome which earned him the name, ‘Second Apostle of Rome’. He even ministered to prostitutes and others normally shunned by the rest of the community.

May the Lord enlighten and guide us through our present trials and keep us near to God especially this period of COVID-19 pandemic! Amen!! Keep safe, peace be with you!!!
