The Memorial of St Catherine

Acts 8:1-8, Jn 6:35-40. Today’s first reading introduces us to Paul at his worst.Today’s first reading introduces Paul to us at his worst. Saul, the zealous and misguided young Pharisee, attempted to destroy the then young and fledging Church, using violence to strike at the followers of 'the way' and all who were suspected to be Christians. The early Christians suffer trials, endure prison and martyrdom because of their steadfast faith in God. Despite all these, we must not lose heart just as those Christians remained strong in their faith, as they committed themselves to the cause of the Lord and His Church even amidst the persecutions. Philip the Apostle preached the Good News of God and carried out his ministry even at the height of the persecution from the Jewish authorities and the vengeful but misguided crusade of people like Saul.

The early Christians had the assurance of the presence of God that strengthened their closeness to Jesus. They learnt from Jesus to do the will of God as it is His goal. They discovered that it was worthwhile to entrust their lives to Him who assures them: "I would not lose even one person whom the Father had given me." The Lord Jesus Christ through whom we have received the assurance of eternal life called us and brought us to Him, that through Him we may find our way to eternal glory with Him in Heaven. That is why we must focus our attention on the Lord, our Hope and our Light, even when we encounter difficulties and challenges in our lives as Christians. Today, we are challenged to imitate the good examples of St Catherine of Siena, a great and renowned saint and Doctor of the Church whose life and contributions to the Church are felt and experienced till this day. She was renowned for her many visions and experiences of the faith with the Lord that she received when she was as young as five years old and which she continued to receive through life.

May the Lord be the source of our strength so that in our regular reception of the Holy Eucharist, we will be strengthened and encouraged to live more faithfully! Amen!! Keep safe and have a glorious day!!!
