Before Abraham, I Am

Before Abraham, I Am

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Gen. 17:3-9, Jn 8:51-59. It is often said: "Event mocks at human foresight, nothing is certain, only the fear of the unknown". The global coronavirus pandemic is one event that should redirect our minds to understanding certain realities of life, especially human equality. Many are frightened about what is happening and what it means for the future. Everyone is afraid and worried about their health and finances, both old and young, black and white, rich and poor alike. We can panic or stress out about this crisis the world is experiencing or we could look at this time in our world as an opportunity to be united as one from the same Father and Creator. God’s promise to Abraham reaches the future, even into our present age. It anticipates a day when all the nations of the world will be united as members of one great family, like relatives, related to Abraham, our father in faith.

Where we will be united, not only by common genealogy or shared race but one faith, where no one travels alone, where all have a fair share of earth’s riches and the dignity of all is respected, whether black or white. The promise to Abraham in today's first reading enjoins us to think big, respond generously, seek and have the divine ideal of one world, one people, where no one will be discriminated against because of colour, gender, race or ethnicity. To establish a strong bond among everyone on earth, Jesus in today's Gospel, expands the horizon of the divine family. Jesus means more to us than Abraham “our father in faith”. He is the Son who was with the Father before the universe was made and who directed world history so that Abraham eventually emerged as an icon for all people of faith. As sharing in the great "I AM", Jesus is Lord of history. His hopes and plans will remain unfulfilled until all human beings feel themselves united as one family. This ideal is echoed in Paul’s letter to the Galatians: “There is no longer among you Jew or Greek, slave or free person, male or female.

May the Lord be our guide and constant source of strength at this difficult time, so that we may live more faithfully in the loving presence of God! Amen!! Remain safe and have a fear free day!!!
