CULTURAL FIESTA AT ST PETER’S, OTA

CULTURAL FIESTA AT ST PETER’S, OTA

The Catholic Youth Organisation of Nigeria (CYON) of St Peter’s, Ota, Abeokuta diocese held a cultural fiesta on Sunday 19 November.

Speaking about “Our culture, our Church, the parish youth president, Miss Christy Izibili, explained that the theme was carefully chosen because of the need to “marry our church with our culture” to meet the cultural challenges of the catholic youth in their present-day church activities.

Christy said the culture of the Catholic youth should be tailored to reflect the values of Christ, which states: “do not model your behaviour on the contemporary world but let the renewing of our minds transform you, so that you may discern for yourself what is the will of God – what is good and acceptable and mature.”

St Theresa’s Ilo Awela, an outstation of St Peter’s Ota, won the cultural dance competition; CKC Afobaje came second, while St Peter’s Ota took the third position.

In a cooking competition, St Theresa, Ilo Awela showed class again by winning the competition; St Dominic Eleidi came second, while CKC Afobaje was third.

The climax of the event was the crowning of the King and Queen of the parish youth. Comrade Chukwuebuka Izuegbu was crowned the king, while Christy Chukwuyere was crowned queen.

While crowning the rulers of the youth, Mr Ogedemgbe explained that position of authority is an invitation to serve because of the recognition of the ability of the person involved. He therefore implored the king to be humble as he marries his cultural expectations with the teachings of the Church.

Earlier, the parish priest, Rev. Fr Vincent Zanu, had congratulated the youths for organising the event and prayed God to bless their vision and mission. The assistant parish priest, Rev. Fr Joseph Sule, OSJ, also celebrated with them.
