ARCHBISHOP ABEGUNRIN TELLS FAITHFUL TO FOCUS ON HOLINESS DURING HOLY WEEK OKE-PADI, IBADAN

MOST REV.GABRIEL ‘Leke Abegunrin has urged the Catholic faithful to learn more about their faith during the holy week, thus making the week truly holy for themselves. He said this in his sermon at St Mary’s Cathedral, Oke-Padi, Ibadan, during the Palm Sunday celebration commemorating Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem on 25 March.

Archbishop Abegunrin noted that this is a very significant week in the Catholic Church because it commemorates the period when the work of our salvation was completed. “To the  faithful, this is a reality we perform every year. It teaches us different stages of our salvation and even non-Catholics admire us especially with regard to the preservation of sacred places in Jerusalem through the offering which is collected every good Friday across Catholic Churches in the world,” he said.

Archbishop Abegunrin urged the faithful to seize this period to learn about their faith.”Make this week truly holy for yourself. Struggle to know more about your faith by utilising various means of enlightenment.

We should know that our journey in this holy week has just begun. We shall have lots of activities this week. I urge all of us to actively participate and re-energise our faith in Christ,” he said.

Archbishop Abegunrin reiterated the need to remain one, united and indivisible family church by helping one another to grow.

“As Catholics, let us be ready to help one another. Let us not look down on anyone, because the Church is our mother, while all of us are brothers and sisters. This means we must dwell in love and harmony at all times and we should endeavour to pass across the faith to the next generation,” he concluded.

Earlier, a procession was held Adamasingba to the Cathedral, where parishioners rejoiced, holding palm fronds.

Present at the Mass were the Vicar-General/Cathedral Administrator: V. Rev. Fr Gregory Oyelami, Rev. Frs Anthony Adediran, and a deacon from Lagos Archdiocese.
